Today is already the last day of the year. How do Russians celebrate this holiday?

Usually New Year is a family holiday with tables full of different tasty things and champagne. President of Russia addresses nation before clock strikes 12 and then a lot of fireworks and bottles of champagne burst out into celebrations which now officially lasts almost 10 days.

For children it’s a magical day - they can find their presents under the New Year Tree. Sometimes Дед Мороз / Ded Moroz (Russian Santa Claus, we call him Father Frost) and Снегурочка / Snegurochka (Ded Moroz’s granddaughter) come to houses and give away gifts after children sing them a song or recite poems about winter and New Year.

Let’s learn some phrases which we use to congratulate each other:

• C наступающим НовымГодом! [S nas-too-pa-yu-schim Novym Godom!] Happy coming New Year!
• С Новым Годом! [S Novym Godom!]Happy New Year!
• С наступающим Рождеством ! [S nas-too-pa-yu-schim Rozh-dest-vom! ] Merry coming Christmas! P.S. Russians celebrate Christmas on 6th-7th of January night (Julian calendar)
• C Рождеством [Христовым]! [S Rozh-dest-vom [Khris-to-vym]!] Merry Christmas!
• Со Старым Новым Годом! [So Starym Novym Godom!] Happy Old New Year! Yeah, it sounds strange but we do celebrate it too on 13th of January – New Year by Old Style (Julian calendar). It’s not an official holiday but a good chance to have a small gathering again.

Common phrases which can be said for any holiday (we took it in Episode 4 – Victory day):

• С наступающим праздником! Happy coming holiday!
• С праздником! Happy Holiday!
• Поздравляем! Congratulations! (plural, from a group of people)
• Поздравляю! Congratulations! (singular)

The most famous Russian New Year song is “V lesy rodilas yolochka” (A small fir-tree was born in the forest). Every Russian young and adult knows it. That’s all for today, now let’s sing a song and see you already in New Year 2009!

“Русская баня” [russkaya banya] = Russian banya (traditional Russian steam bath, more details in Wikipedia). “Русская” = Russian (feminine, adjective).

“Бассейн” [bassein] = swimming pool.

“Сауна” [sauna] = sauna.

“Тренажерный зал” [trenazhernyi zal] = gym, exercise room. “Тренажерный” (masculine, adjective) = training. “Зал” = hall, room.

“Опасная зона” [opasnaya zona] = dangerous area, dangerous zone. “Опасная” (feminine, adjective) = dangerous. “Зона” = zone.

“Стоп-кран” (usually in trains) [stop-kran] = emergency brake valve. “Стоп” = stop.

“Добро пожаловать!” [dobro pozhalovat] = Welcome!

“Нулевой километр автодорог Удмуртской республики” [nulevoi kilometr avtodorog udmurtskoy respubliki] = Zero kilometer of highways of Udmurt Republic. “Автодорога” [avtodoroga] = highway (there it’s used in plural in Genetive case. “Удмуртская” [udmurtskaya] = Udmurt (feminine, adjective, in picture used in Genetive case). “Республика” [respublika] = republic (in picture used in Genetive case).

Today I will show you some pictures which can help you to find pharmacy, hair-stylist’s or post office in Russia:

“Стоматологический кабинет” [stomatologichesky kabinet] = dental office or dental room.

“Режим работы” [rezhim raboty] = work schedule, working hours. “Работа” [rabota] noun = work (on the picture it’s used in Genetive case).

And then you can see abbreviation of week days:

Пн - “Понедельник” [ponedelnik] = Monday

Вт - “Вторник” [vtornik] = Tuesday

Ср - “Среда” [sreda] = Wednesday

Чт - “Четверг” [chetverg] = Thursday

Пт - “Пятница” [pyatnitsa] = Friday

Сб - “Суббота” [subbota] = Saturday

Вс - “Воскресенье” [voskresenie] =Sunday

In Russia week days are from Monday to Friday and weekend is on Saturday and Sunday.

Here they also provide dentist services: “Стоматология” [stomatologiya] = dentistry.

And in case you need to check your watch or clock you can visit “Ремонт часов” [remont chasov] = clock hospital. “Ремонт” means “repair”.  “Часы” [chasy] always plural = watch or clock (here it’s used in Genetive case).

“Парикмахерская” [parikmakherskaya] = hair stylist’s, hairdressing saloon, barbershop.

“Гостиница” [gostinitsa] = hotel

“Центральная” [tsentral'naya] = central (feminine gender)

“Аптечный пункт” [aptechny punkt] = chemist’s shop, pharmacy

“Аптека” [apteka] = pharmacy

“Почта России” [pochta rossii] = Russian post. “Почта” [pochta] = post. “Россия” [rossiya] = Russia (used in Genetive case).

“Касса” [kassa] = ticket office.

Very hard to read, it’s written “Милиция” [militsiya] = militia, police.

You can meet at least 3 different letters “M” in Russia. Let’s get aquianted with them:

“Метро” [metro] = metro

Very famous “M” - Mac Donalds

And the last “M” means “мужской” [muzhskoy] adjective = the men’s (toilet).

By the way “Ж” means “женский” [zhensky] adjective = the lady’s (toilet).

Welcome to the 2nd part of our photo-report. Today we will talk about shops.

This picture was taken in some small station where you can still find this kind of shops. You can hardly find them in big cities with huge supermarkets. But even in supermarkets you may see these words dividing different sections:

“Посуда” [posuda] - cookware, dishes, plates

“Сувениры” [suveniry] - souvenirs

“Люстры” [lyustry] - chandeliers

“Хрусталь” [khrustal'] - crystal wares (dishes made out of high quality glass)

“Продукты” [produkty] - food products

“Промтовары” [promtovary] - manufactured goods

Магазин “Дорожный”. Магазин [magazin] means “shop”. “Дорожный” [dorozhnyi] - it’s an adjective - means road. So it’s “road shop” or “shop near road”

“Продукты”. We already know the meaning (see above).

The next picture was taken in Izhevsk, Udmurtia:

Овощи [ovoschi] = vegetables

Фрукты [frukty] = fruits

What is written on the next shop we already know (Магазин. Продукты). Guess what can be written under the working hours:

“Без обеда и выходных”. Без [bez] = without. Обед [obed] = lunch break (used in Genetive case). Выходные [vyhodnye] = weekends (also in Genetive case). So it means: “Without lunch break and weekends”.

“Одежда” [odezhda] = clothes. “Каждый” [kazhdyi] = every. “День” [den'] = day. So “Одежда на каждый день” means “Clothes for every day” (utility clothes).

“Низкий” [nizkyi] = low (singular, masculine). “Цена“ [tsena] = price (singular). “Низкие цены” [nizkie tseny] = low prices.

“Штучный отдел” [shtuchnyi otdel]. That how we call small kiosks/tents which are usually on tram/bus stops where you can buy a coca-cola can, chocolate or a pack of chips (goods by the piece).

Next picture is a little bit confusing as there is a hand-writing font is used:

“Цветы” [tsvety] = flowers (“цветок” = flower, singular).  “Удмуртия” [udmurtiya] = Udmurtia (Republic), used in Genetive case. So “Цветы Удмуртии” means “Flowers of Udmurtia”.

“Золотая” [zolotaya] = golden (feminine). “Табакерка” [tabakerka] = tobacco box.

“Сигареты” [sigarety] = cigarettes; “сигары” [sigary] = cigars; “табак” [tabak] = tobacco; “трубки” [trubki] = tobacco pipes, “аксессуары” (there it’s written with one mistake ;)) [aksessuary] = accessories.

“Наше” [nashe] = our (neutor); “пиво” [pivo] = beer.

“Бакалейная лавка” [bakaleynaya lavka] = grocery shop.

Welcome to the 1st part of our photo-report from Russia. Let’s learn some words on the pictures we could take during the trip.

Usually Russia starts from the airport. We already know that in Russian it sounds almost the same: “Аэропорт”. Another popular type of transportation in Russia - train/bus stations. Here how they look:

“Вокзал” [vokzal] = station (picture is taken in Izhevsk, Udmurtia)

Another station (taken in Novosibirsk, Siberia)

“Автовокзал” [avtovokzal] = bus station (taken in Biysk, Siberia)
“Вход” means “entrance” (on the same picture, on the top of the door)
